Like others have said, use OEM parts and document everything and you are good to go at lease return.

The easiest is to take it to a dealer and as long as they will do the work for what your insurance will pay (or other party's insurance) then you are all good.

If that doesn't work another strategy is to find out the third party shop that a BMW dealer sends cars to (not all of them own a body shop) and go to that third party directly and negotiate with them. They usually are able to make it work out so they use OEM parts and get it all to fit within what your insurance will pay. Basically if you cut out the dealer (who sometimes marks up the work as a middleman) you save money.
