Since the coupe was not that sucessful for BMW, they hoped to kill 2 birds with one stone with the folding hard top. They figured they would make more money and gain more customers overall by having only a folding hard top. BMW is taking the gamble that the people they will lose by not having a coupe is not more than developing and maiking a coupe. Plus they fihure they will attract more people with a folding hard top, than loose people because of extra weight and no rag top.
