Back in the day, when your pump was making noise, there was some rumors flying around that BMW's fuel level sensors were contributing to the HPFP failures due to the split tank. I recall I suggested keeping your tank full to see if the humming would go away. I was wrong, but that's a good thing because no one wants to have to deal with that all the time. BMW came up with a good, long-term solution.

As a general rule, regardless of make/model filling at around a 1/4 tank is good idea for the life of your in-tank fuel pump, however.
