I believe the answer is yes. I discussed the issue of the HPFP with Steve Dinan back in November of 2009 while he was at a So Ca dealership sponsored event.

He indicated that BMW had to program new codes in the ecu to make sure the mechanics didn't automatically replace the HPFP. He stated, that sometimes the in-tank fuel failed but they automatically replaced the HPFP, and then had to go back and replace the in-tank fuel pump.
