Limp mode is designed to basically protect the drive train.
On my 2011 Z4 it was a module on the DCT. Warranty took care of it quickly from the code readouts.
When my son's 2009 328 acted exactly like my Z4 did when in limp mode, I proudly announced to him it was the transmission.
Wrong, it was the plugs and coils. Stealer put in new and now running fine.
As above, have the codes read by a competent indy or dealer. Should tell you what problem is. Always a possibility just a one time throw but probably not.
