That is usually the case, for most cars.
One thing I've learned about these direct-injected, high strung engines is that they are
very sensitive to a dirty air filter.
On my IS350 I noticed a fuel mileage degradation once the air filter reached 8,000 miles/13,000 km or so, and changing it instantly restored the mpg.
I would assume the N54 engine to be just as sensitive; these things need lots of air! Change or clean your air filter every 10k miles/16k km or so to preserve your fuel mileage and performance.
