That is false. Type 5 of your chosen cars into google and compare for yourself using 2002 as the first year and 2009 as the second. Most gained at least 200 lbs and some over 500 lbs.

And the mechanical roof is but an excuse. The overall weight of the mechanisms of the roof weigh about 200lbs. The E89 is still well over 400 lbs heavier than its predecessor. There's no denying that it is a lot heavier for what it is. For a 2 seat roadster to weight in excess of 3,500 lbs is a shame.
Where are you getting your weight figures. The E89 weighs between 3100 lbs and 3300 lbs depending on the engine.

For a point of reference, the E85 M Roadster comes in with a HEAVIER engine (S54 is solid iron block), 330hp (more power), and weighs 500 lbs less than the sDrive35. That, is a HUGE step back.
Again where are you getting these weight figures? The lightest E85 is roughly 2850 lbs and the heaviest is nearly 3200 lbs. A gain of up to 250 lbs, most of that is the hardtop roof.

The E85 MRoadie is the heaviest of all E85s and was half a second slower to 60 than the sDrive35is which weighs less than 150 lbs more.
