True for BMW, not true for a large percentage of the industry. In fact, quite a few contemporary vehicles of the same generation from other manufacturers weighed less than their predecessors.

And the mechanical roof is but an excuse. The overall weight of the mechanisms of the roof weigh about 200lbs. The E89 is still well over 400 lbs heavier than its predecessor. There's no denying that it is a lot heavier for what it is. For a 2 seat roadster to weight in excess of 3,500 lbs is a shame.

For a point of reference, the E85 M Roadster comes in with a HEAVIER engine (S54 is solid iron block), 330hp (more power), and weighs 500 lbs less than the sDrive35. That, is a HUGE step back.
