According to other sites, the same ZF 8HP is being used on all 7-series models, including this one, and BMW had to cap the torque output because that was the max it could handle. Other versions of the transmission can handle more (pretty sure the Chrysler Hellcat models and Audi SQ7 use the ZF HP90 8-speed). Not sure if there was a packaging constraint or BMW just felt the costs associated with sourcing a different transmission for a low volume model weren't worth it. Either way I think it's a shame -- without being constrained the engine might have matched or eclipsed the SQ7's diesel V8 with twin turbos and electric supercharger. That would have been an impressive headline, and it's an opportunity lost to one up a big rival who has certainly not shied away from one upping them the last few years.
