I think if the difference is too large, it prematurely wears out the CV joints.

Another option for that is the new tire can be shaved to match the diameter of the existing tires.
Doesn't seem so great an idea to shave down a perfectly new tire but if you have all wheel drive then it makes better sense to buy one new one and shave it down to match the other three.
